Shevlin - Louisa Miller - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Last Monday shortly past one o’clock Mrs. Louisa J. Shevlin died at the home of her son-in-law, Abner Jones, 317 Lafayette Avenue. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, the services being conducted by Rev. S. W. Goss.

Mrs. Shevlin was the first white female child born in Crawfordsville, being born on February 23, 1824. She was the daughter of Jacob Miller, a soldier who fought with Washington in the Revolutionary War, and who is now buried here. Mr. Miller came with the Wilhites to this place from Virginia in 1823 and during his life time here resided in a log house which still stands (now boarded over) just east of the Sherman house. Mrs. Shevlin was married on Feb. 17, 1847 to James Shevlin and to them was born ten children, only three of whom are now living: Isaac Shevlin, James Shevlin, and Mrs. Abner Jones. The father, James Shevlin, was killed in the Civil War, being shot dead at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. He was a member of Co. B, 120th Indiana volunteers.  Mrs. Shevlin was a woman of more than ordinary intelligence and of great force of character. She was a consistent member of the Christian Church and her life was one of devotion. -s
